Artist statement
The afterimage is the real subject.
Noor Basri is a London-based painter whose work begins with color remembered imperfectly: light from a train window, a screen after it goes dark, or the heat left behind by a crowded room.
Thin veils of pigment are layered with sharper interruptions, allowing each canvas to shift between atmosphere and structure. The work rewards distance, then changes again up close.
“I paint the color that stays after the thing itself has disappeared.”
