Artist statement
Painting what a place remembers.
Working between Miami and San Juan, Mara Vélez builds layered abstractions from linen, mineral pigment, oil stick, and fragments of remembered architecture.
Her surfaces are constructed slowly, then interrupted: sanded, folded, scraped, and redrawn until they hold the tension between permanence and change.
“I’m interested in the marks that remain after a place has changed.”
